The 4 Roles of Leadership

Leading teams or projects is a big responsibility. However, the effective application of the 4 roles of leadership will help you get there.
  1. Modelling: create a culture of trust.
  2. Pathfinding: communicate a vision.
  3. Aligning: build systems.
  4. Empowering: unleash the team.

1. Modeling

Your ability to create a high-trust culture will serve as the foundation for successful projects and team synergy.

Trust is the one thing that changes everything. Becoming a trustworthy leader requires both character and competence. Character comes from integrity and intent. While competence comes from capabilities and results. We call these the 4 cores of credibility. It is these 4 cores of credibility that give you self-trust. Given self-trust, the incredible fruits of relationship and organisational trust become possible.

2. Pathfinding

Become the catalyst that ignites passion around a common vision or goal.

Pathfinding is the capacity to connect what you are passionate about in a way that aligns the team with a shared vision. Great leaders are able to answer three questions:
1. Who is important to us, and what matters to them?
2. What is our purpose and what matters most to us?
3. Where are we going and how will we get there?

3. Aligning

Pathfinding identifies the path and aligning paves the path. The road to success becomes a smooth ride with the right systems and procedures.

Great organisations break down their vision into smaller parts. Each of these smaller parts are owned by a smaller team. As the smaller teams execute on their tasks, the whole organisation progresses toward their desired goal. The team leader understands this, and skillfully invites the right people to join smaller teams aligned with their interest and capabilities.

4. Empowering

Release the talent, energy and contribution of the team.

Do you trust your team? If so, get out of their way and let them work. The leader’s job is to maintain a high-trust culture, reaffirm the vision and clear the path as needed. The celebration of targeted goals will not come from your ability to work hard, but from your ability to release the greatness of a passionate team aiming for a common goal.
